The Effect of Self-esteem on Quality of Life in Home Elderly: Verification of Mediating Effect of GRIT

Abstract
|
|
|
Objective: The purpose of this study is to understand the effect of self-esteem on the quality of life of the elderly at home, and to verify the mediating effect of grit in these influence relationships.
Methods: This study was conducted for 152 home-based seniors who used the services of the Home Elderly Service Support Center. A scale adapted by Jeon Byeong-je (1974) from the Self-Esteem Scale developed by Rosenberg (1965) to measure the subjects' self-esteem, grit (consistency in interest, persistence in effort), and quality of life. , and the Korean version of the WHOQOL BREF modified by Min et al. based on the scale of , Suran Lee (2014) and the WHOQOL-100 developed by the World Health Organization.
Results: First, the self-esteem of the elderly at home had a positive and significant effect on the quality of life. Second, the self-esteem of the at-home elderly did not have a significant effect on the interest consistency of grit, and the statistical significance level was identified statically on the persistence of effort. Third, the interest consistency of grit did not have a significant effect on the quality of life of the elderly at home, and it was confirmed that the persistence of effort had a positive and significant effect on the quality of life. Fourth, in the relationship between self-esteem and quality of life, grit's persistence in effort showed a positive partial mediating effect.
Conclusion: The self-esteem of the home elderly and the persistence of grit are important variables to im prove the quality of life, and systematic intervention and program development of social welfare services are required.
